Keeping the Future Bright

One of this year’s hottest college football recruits seems to have a bright future. He was one of the most sought-after college players nationwide. He was also recruited by several of the country’s top football programs.  Impressive, for sure, but it appears that all of those accolades may have gone to his head.

I got an up-close look at this young man earlier this year at a high school scholarship dinner for athletes.  The confidence and swagger displayed by this then-high school senior were impossible to ignore.

He had reason to be full of himself. Just days before, on National Signing Day, he committed to play at a top college. Attitude aside, I was unpleasantly surprised and disheartened when this young athlete was arrested in the spring. Initially, he faced six charges – including minor consumption of alcohol, speeding, driving without a license and disregarding a stop sign. But a day later, all of those charges were reduced to a warning except for one – evading arrest with a vehicle.

Taking a closer look, maybe his future won’t be so bright. I am concerned about the potential for trouble if he goes on to play football in a major city. I wonder who will watch, guide and advise this 19-year-old? I don’t want to place blame on anyone for his behavior, but since I saw his parents at the dinner it’s clear they are a part of his life. I can’t help but wonder if they could rein in his behavior.

Parental oversight plays an enormous role in shaping and steering young athletes. As parents, it’s our job to make sure our children know their athletic talents are gifts and they must be used responsibly. If they compromise a little here and there, it could lead to an undisciplined life style that could ruin their professional career. They must keep their eyes on the prize: getting a well-rounded education, while focusing their energies on playing well and being a good citizen.

Athletes are role models, and universities, sports teams, and companies look for athletes that exhibit a high moral standard to represent their brand. I would advise parents to instill this type of mindset in their children at an early age. That way, when opportunity knocks, they will know how to respond.

As for the sought-after recruit, I hope it’s not too late for him. I think a mentor could help steer this young man in the right direction. A mentor’s guidance, coupled with his parents nurturing supervision could help him turn his life around. He still has amazing skills on the football field. Let’s hope he gets the help he needs to steer him in the right direction off the field as well.
